What’s behind Orville Peck’s leather mask?
It seems easy trying to define Orville Peck at just one glance — it’s clearly a rising country star with a leather eye-mask on. But as soon as you listen to his music, you know there’s much more – and that he’s far away from his own references, like Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, and Willie Nelson.
Peck is an LGBTQ+ artist who mixes the wild west spirit with shoegaze guitars, cinematic inspirations and multiple vocals. Adding to it an outlaw cowboy demeanor, layers of experimentation and some theatrical elements, this masked singer-songwriter launched this year his debut album, 'Pony’ March.
After getting hooked on Peck's music and everything he brings into stage, now it's time to know a few more things about him.
1. He's got a sick collection of leather masks.
You think he only got one dirty ol' mask? There's almost 20 of them — and counting. Peck's even made one of them all in chains, while another hangs almost down to his feet. Some of the masks have never been used 'cause Peck can't play the guitar while wearing those long leather pieces.
2. He has his own definition for the term “cowboy”.
No hat (and no mask) needed. For Peck, Nina Simone was a pretty incredible cowboy: someone who was forced, by nature, to live as an outsider. Nina was never afraid to speak and sing her mind, even in the day and age she lived.
3. He's a big movies fan.
If by any chance you get to know Orville in person and wanna call him over to hang out, you're already know what deal to pick. David Lynch, Alejandro Jodorowsky, and Gus Van Sant are ones of his favorites, aside with old movie musicals from the 40's, 50's and 60's.
You can see the Lynch influence in videos like ‘Big Sky’ and ‘Dead of Night’.
4. Peck's great on faking accents and have considered adding one for his gigs.
Not as part of the cowboy look, but as part of the performance. He believes that shows gotta be a full experience – however that may look —, and is always trying to go a step further from whatever he is doing. Peck's that kind of guy that is far from interest in doing something halfway: it's 100 percent or nothing.
5. There's nothing to hide.
Peck is a true believer that masks don't actually hide anything at all. All his 20 leather masks are more exposing than anything — when he covers himself, he can be who he really is.
BONUS: He wants U to figure out Y he uses the mask.
Sorry, we ain't here to tell you that. The story and significance behind the leather-and-fringe eye-masks remains uncover, but Orville Peck says you can find the answer yourself. “The look of it is based off two or three obvious references that I think people could figure it out. It may be more rewarding than just reading it.”
Two or three refs together… Any guesses?
