What happened to Val Kilmer
Big question popping up on everyone's mind: what happened to Val Kilmer? That's exactly what he's just starting to figure out.
Even before you can understand what happened to him, you have to know who he was in the first place. The star in Batman, Top Gun, Willow & so many more was a big hit in the 80s to 90s & can't even be compared to any movie star from then or now.
During his time as a big bat fighting crime on camera, he understood that Batman is not meant to be a real guy. The superhero is meant to be so anonymous that anyone can see themselves in him.
The actor can't be his own specific self — which he wished to be in any character, even behind a mask. When he took it off, he was finally free.
On the topic of feeling free, Kilmer hit some bumps on the way. Back in 2008 he lost his home from gambling — & with his home went a bunch of potential roles and his Hollywood status.
“Everyone has to work out their own salvation. How to live and by what morality, and I found that the part I feel bad about is hurting somebody in the process,” he told NY Times at his HelMel office in Hollywood.
Kilmer can't exactly remember the year he started having symptoms of throat cancer, but the disease took his voice & required him to receive a tracheostomy tube to be able to talk. Perhaps a different voice and a different vision of the world. But still Val Kilmer.
Between all the bad, art continues to be the big it-thing for the Juilliard graduate & it should be for us all, as he said:
"You still need art. You still need forward momentum. You still need to believe that all your effort wasn’t for nothing, that we could — we will — survive a dark moment in history and that when that happens, we won’t be left without the things that made those moments decipherable and meaningful and therefore tolerable."
That's the relentless optimism everyone def needs.
