This dream team are two-of-a-kind when it comes to taking on the world of style from streetwear to high fashion ― meet Ami&Aya, the TOKYO TWINS.

Although they’re identical, their unique shared style looks like it’s never been done before, combining the drastically diverse genres of style that coexist in Tokyo’s street scene and creating an aesthetic of their very own ― a look of bold designs, vibrant colors, and premium materials that shines thru an array of endeavors from modeling to creative directing and more.

Before the world turned upside-down, we met the twins twice as the flashes turned to their leather fits at the Fashion Weeks in Paris and London 📸.

Based in:

Japanese fashion has many styles, but we think all of them have an influence on the global fashion world.

Japanese culture transcends boundaries ― like the kimono and tabi (traditional Japanese socks), kawaii culture, lolita, gothic lolita, street culture in Ura-Harajuku, manga and anime, and so on.

We think the patterns, details, and many other features within Japanese culture provide inspiration and new values to luxury brands and global streetwear as a whole, and we think there are multiple designers and brands that have their roots based on these features.

City life:

Tokyo is a very exciting city. Within this city, there are people of various genres and styles, mixed together and living between modern buildings, neon crowds, and quaint back alleys. It is a place of many contrasts, offering a variety of unique experiences. This is what influences our style and we learn a lot by observing and feeling the people around us and the city itself.

In our "mixed style", we merge elements and materials of grunge and romance, luxury and vintage, to make a brand new coordinated style.

Breakthrough:

When we were kids, our parents had a small boutique, so we were used to being surrounded by trendy things. We started appearing in street snaps when we were around 16 or 17 years old, and since then we have been modeling and branding. Later we started going to overseas collections, which brought us to where we are now.

Next move:

We want to engage in projects that deliver energy and strength through fashion, while expanding the appeal of Japan throughout the world.

"Luxury brands often incorporate leather into products like bags and shoes, as it’s a universal material that can be used carefully for a long time. When thrifting, we try to choose items that will last the longest, regardless of passing trends."

Beyond fashion:

We love ‘90s grunge movies and music like Nirvana and Hole, Nine Inch Nails and The Music, plus dance, house, and techno music.

We love movies from a wide array of genres including science fiction, action, and romantic comedy. One of our favorites is Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

We really love to travel, but because of global lockdowns we can’t do much right now ― when the situation calms down, we would love to go to new countries to know more about the beauty of the world we haven't known yet.

Inspirations:

Compared to other girl bands, Puffy AmiYumi's style is completely different, like the haircuts, the fashion (T-shirt, denim, and sneakers, for example), and many more aspects. This style has a unique aura that only they could offer in the cartoon world. We pride ourselves on enjoying fashion and individuality, just as our originality. We learned the importance of having our own identity from them.
