New Balance kicked off Black History Month
To kick off Black History Month, New Balance debuted its new "My Stories Matter" collection ― and it goes much deeper beyond fresh new kicks.
Pioneered by a team of Black NB associates, the collection and campaign pays homage to culture, history, and heritage by empowering Black voices and elevating stories that are too often overlooked. Acknowledging the timely release given the significant racial tensions and protests that filled 2020, the brand's Senior Product Manager for Lifestyle Apparel, Chavon Cham, says "This Black History Month takes on a new meaning and importance in light of the events of this past year. We wanted to create a collection that celebrates the power of Black stories, both in name and design."

The collection features the New Balance 574 and the USA 990v5, both dressed in soft suede and bold purple shades that serve as a nod to a memorable part of classic Black church services: the robes worn by gospel choirs. Emphasizing the message, the campaign stars Jaden Smith and Coco Gauff, who present their individual pious inspirations. The 990v5 comes dressed in mainly tan complemented by regal purple on the heel and a deep burgundy trim, featuring a smooth suede and mesh upper for a lightweight, comfy feel. For the 574, rich purple suede dominate the design with elegant black, burgundy, and gold accents completing the look.
