Get ur leather on and let's get kinky for PORNCEPTUAL
Pornceptual is not a *basic* sex party where everyone is getting off w/ random ppl — although we all know that might happen.
The project has a very clear socio-political mission: to challenge the mainstream misogyny in the porn industry & to create pornography that is respectful, intimate, and even artistic. It's also a magazine and a tr00 platform for performances and exhibitions. But it's right there in a dancefloor in Berlin where all the magic happens. 🕺
The hedonism IRL party begins at the check line: w/ all the latex, there are a LOT of leather garments, heavy lthr jackets, and so on — you can feel the leathery aroma from here.
We had a little chat w/ Chris Phillips & Raquel Fedato, the proud owners of Pornceptual, about its story and how clothes (surprise, surprise) are such a huge thing at a party like that.

Oh, b4 u move on, here's a playlist w/ artists who play there to get you in the PORNCEPTUAL MOOD.
The project started back in Brazil but fell in love here in Berlin. What is it about the city that makes it the perfect place for Pornceptual?
Berlin, since the 20s, has been a reference in the cultural scene for many musical and artistic aspects as well as its authenticity. So, in my opinion, that's what makes it a perfect city for Pornceptual. Also, Berlin has always had a powerful free body culture. So people are used to nudity, and I believe this also plays a significant role in what we do here.
The city is known for its very progressive electronic music scene, which helped Pornceptual a lot. It was the perfect environment to develop a project like this. Compared to Brazil, a conservative country that has become more and more right-wing, here, we can still find a very open-minded community, which supports our events since we started.
Essentially, Berlin enables us to do what we do. We wouldn't be able to throw these parties the way we do anywhere else. We've tried many times, but there are many limitations in regard to laws or even to what people, in general, are used to.
So I'd say it's both a mix of politics, culture and general habits of how people have been living here for the last century.
How is also Pornceptual perfect to Berlin? What do u think it adds to a nightlife that seems to have everything?
Upon arriving in Berlin, we both fell in love with the queer and the music scene.
At the same time, we perceived the traditional fetish scene as very conventional and male-dominated. So we thought that through art, we could create an event that approaches sex parties more creatively. Since Pornceptual is an art project, we had all the necessary tools to do it.
A little back to Pornceptual itself, a lot of people know us from our events. But our project goes way beyond that. We have a magazine, an online shop, and regularly hosts exhibitions and performances night apart from our bi-monthly parties. This is also how Pornceptual started: as an online platform to feature up and coming artists that work around erotica.

Most people show up at Pornceptual with some ideas in mind. How do u guys usually describe Pornceptual?
Pornceptual is a sex-positive club night with an artistic element to it.
Every party has a theme, right? Pornceptual sets the mood, the crowd came up with the lewk. How are clothes so important to pass on an idea?
Berlin has a sluggish style when it comes to clubbing. Some also club in sport or fetish gear, but there is, in most cases, never a lot of effort in how people dress. So we tried to push this element a little by challenging people to get more creative based on the theme we pick for each edition. This also helps us to recreate our events because it gives us direction and inspiration when booking artists and deciding how to work with the space we have.

What's the deal: more like “dress to impress” or “dress to express”?
Dress to express. We're not so strict about the dress code, but it is an essential part of our concept. Also, people have a lot of different possibilities in terms of pricing. We encourage people to undress, and if they show more skin, they get a cheaper entrance. Whenever we increase people's freedom, it helps others feel more confident in their bodies as well.
What makes leather so damn sexy?
Chris: I'm not too fond of latex. It doesn't let your skin breathe and makes you so sweaty. So I prefer leather. Leather has this rough aesthetic that turns me on in a way. It's one of the best materials if you want to look sexy as it is very aesthetic. So it is not only about the feel, but also about the look. There is some kind of authority connected to it.
Raquel: While I love leather, my thing is really with latex. How it feels on your skin and how it looks... It fits differently than regular cotton or fabrics we wear daily. I associate it with sexiness. In the end, what you associate with specific fabrics or materials is what makes them sexy.

There's a good question on ur website: "Can art succeed where porn fails — to actually turn us on?" So the interrogation point turns back to u now.
The whole motivation behind the project is to recreate pornography. We believe that the porn industry has become very dull and predictable. It is very limiting as well as a binary presentation of how you can express sexuality. So with Pornceptual, we use art as a way to communicate and explore sexuality. This also reinforces our connection with the arts.
So we would say the answer to this question is yes. After all, this is what we have been doing for six years now: exploring different ways of making people feel stimulated through aesthetic pornography.

A lot of ppl consume porn. But some of them are ashamed of talking about it. Why do u think it happens?
For many decades, people were forced into feeling ashamed about sexuality due to conservative values. Sex has always been a taboo, and for that reason, people are ashamed of consuming pornography. But at the same time, it is a way for people to explore their sexuality hiddenly. There is a lot of shame involved in it. Many people avoid talking about sex and get uncomfortable when the topic comes up. There is still a lot of stigmas related to pornography and sexuality in general.
Performers and porn directors are also stigmatized, and society wants those people to stay marginalized. That is why we believe our bodies are such a valuable tool to fight those labels. With Pornceptual, we want people to be more open about their sexuality and less ashamed of having porn as a topic.
Additionally, censorship plays an essential whole in shame towards sex. It is something that has proven itself to be a big problem for us and in many ways, got on our way when trying to pass on our message. Daily, we deal with censorship, especially on social media. On top of that, people sometimes can not understand our work due to previous notions about sex. So one could say that we are trying to fight against conservative values that have been passed on in the last decades. It is a difficult one, but we would say we succeeded so far even though it is for sure a constant struggle.

What hasn't Pornceptual done yet?
There are so many things we want to do. We want to keep on going with the magazine, which is something that we haven't found time for in the last year. And also to keep on collaborating with different collectives on our international events.
Furthermore, we aim to turn Pornceptual into a streaming platform in which people can also consume ethical, aesthetic, and beautiful pornography.
Though the last few years we had the opportunity of growing our parties and defining what our events are about, we can't wait for what is to come.

There are some traditional Berlin parties that are not even accessible to the online crowd. Ppl cannot photograph, cannot talk too much or discover something when passing by a door. How does this scenario work for u? Are there ppl for all these parties?
Berlin has always been notoriously known for its electronic music scene. People travel and live here for this. So in terms of crowd, there are always people keen on joining our events.
It is funny, though, because when we started Pornceptual, “sex-positive” parties were not a thing. There were plenty of traditional sex parties, but very few events that claimed themselves to be sex-positive. A few years after Pornceptual and events like GEGEN had been running, it became a huge trend. We do not want to say we created Berlin’s sex-positive scene, but we somehow influenced what is currently happening in this scene. Also, sex has always been a present element in most clubs over here. This is a Berlin thing, and it has always been.
