find where upcycling sportswear meets high fashion
Paolina Russo just left her "one to watch" status and went straight to "one that's already happening" with her new collab collection with adidas ORIGINALS.
The adidas ORIGINALS by Paolina Russo's drop is a nostalgic celebration of the athletic adolescence of the acclaimed young designer, high-fashion but never far from a '90s-inspired streetwear look.
The Canadian designer who grew up in a city called Marham found her first inspiration in her childhood. As a kid, she didn't have many entertainment options in her town, so she decided to practice different kinds of sports.
She grew up with a desire to create and ended up mixing that passion with her background in athletics by developing sportswear pieces and creating the upcycling brand that bears her name.
Russo interned at Maison Margiela with John Galliano during her early years at college, an experience that influenced her even further as a designer, so it's not a coincidence that we often catch master high-fashion references in her designs.
Her upcycled designs are reworks from existing garments and fabrics, turned into new silhouettes, mostly leather corsets and shoes. The basis for her more traditional creations, usually are leather pieces — the designer has already stated that she values high quality and durable materials, and aim to serve life-long pieces that last a lifetime to the public.
She said in an interview for i-D, that:
"During that process [of creating a collection], my focus became creating a really high-quality product that’s special and also lasts within someone’s wardrobe. Right now, my understanding of sustainability is really a focus on quality. I love working with reclaimed materials, but I feel like right now, it’s more important to focus on minimising that waste and, secondly, making sure that what you’re doing is worth it."
Earlier this year, she participated of London Fashion Week, re-working adidas sneakers and turning into new, exclusive pieces. Now, in the collab with adidas ORIGINALS, Paolina Russo has reimagined the sportswear brand’s essentials by giving a selection of garments a high fashion boost.
The collection features flattering tracksuits, bike shorts and dresses that arrive in designs that interact seamlessly with the form of the body, further exploring her love for contouring and corsetry.
The line also includes corset tops, leggings, dresses, skirts, coats, and socks, as well as color-blocked track pants, tees, and gloves, boasting her trademark 3D illusion knitting technique.
The collection is available on adidas website.
