DOMESTICATING THE UNKNOWN

U've probably never seen a Loch Ness monster yourself, but close your eyes for a sec n u can see its long tail, the neck, the number of bumps on its back. Humans are able by nature to reason about unreasonable things.

That's y the artist-designer Pauline Rip keeps saying that there is more to what we know. She makes mystery REAL at the latest edition of Dutch Design Week, w/ the expo "Riding Ghosts". 🧟‍♂️

Using cryptozoological collections n the help of a statistician, she created a rational image of two cryptids: Nessie n the Yeti. For giving life to these creatures, Pauline has chosen leather n rubber.

Sounds about right. She completes: “also because it's about domesticating and controlling animals using the skin of the animal itself. It really emphasized this idea of the need for control.”

Strangeness, absurdity, irrationality, mystery or even mysticality are life's different ways for Pauline Rip to understand the world.

She told us she wanted to work w/ mysterious creatures, w/ the unpredictable, monsters no one has ever proven the existence of or even taken a clear look.
