Balmain proves the infinite possibilities of leather design
When it comes to turning leather into art, Balmain's art directors are not afraid to be straightforward about it.
Reminding everyone of a Greek sculpture, Zendaya didn't disappoint in the dress she wore at the Venice Film Festival for the premiere of her latest flick, Dennis Villeneuve's Dune — which is also already tipped to be a big Oscar contender.
Styled by the legendary Law Roach, the beige leather dress the actress was spotted in is by Olivier Rousteing of the French Maison and embodies similar details of the marble sculptures which inspired the piece.
It’s easy to tell this is certainly not off the rack — after all, we're talking about what was worn by the youngest CFDA Fashion Icon Award winner. It was proportionally built on an exact three-dimensional mold that was made into a glossy mannequin of Zendaya’s torso, something only an artist with remarkable skills could be able to do.
The French leather artist behind it is Robert Mercier, who revealed the whole process on his Instagram account. He shaped actual calfskin and lambskin to fit her body precisely.
On the same note, the French house also announced its quilted calfskin Pillow Hobo bag, just in time for the brand’s festival, which happened on September 29.
Eye-catching and innovative pieces like this are the reason why Balmain is unique — bringing dream-like aesthetics into life and proving the infinite possibilities of leather designs.
And we’re not only talking about the craftsmanship but also about the legacy behind the brand’s name, which has been shown throughout the years with its singular vision in every collection, meeting the high standards a heritage like that demands while satisfying today's generation desires.
The small details are the most important — they are capable of turning something simple into masterful pieces, and the brand's expertise in haute couture is highlighted by fresh faces and bodies that are ready to receive it as a second skin.
