a living space based on sustainable living
If you were challenged to build a hotel as sustainable as you could, what would you design?
The Student Hotel, a multifunctional hotel and co-working space in Amsterdam, is on a journey to become one of the most sustainable spaces there can be while mingling local people from start-up leaders to seniors in an inspiring atmosphere. And we chatted with the founder and creative director of the team responsible for TSH's incredible interior: Vivian van Schagen from The Invisible Party.
Even tho the boutique design studio comes from the field of brand design, working closely with Nike, for instance, they start every project with a story. The same goes for The Student Hotel case.
"It's really stepping into a space and getting the experience of the values of our client. And materials, colors, art, and furniture tell that story. Every detail matters and I love that layering of a story that you unravel and unpeel. That's my passion," shared Vivian on the driving force behind the project.
The very backbone of this Hotel experience is how Vivian and her team select the right materials. A very unique part of how they showcase every project is a box of materials that sums up the aesthetic and feel of each project. So when you're making a sustainable project from top to bottom, the right thing to go to is a box full of vintage leather finds.
"Leather has the unique property that it gets more beautiful over time for its patina. There are not many materials that have that quality to them. And the interesting thing is we used a lot of vintage furniture here. To give them a second life, and not to buy new furniture. Most of the furniture was reupholstered, in new fabrics, new colors — but the ones we didn't upholster were the ones made out of leather. It just has a very long life cycle."
Circular design from concept to daily use. With a motto on less-is-more on the conception and reuse, preservation, and reduction into every guest's experience.
