Why Medea leather bags are part of a creative rebirth.
The leather bags designed by 33-year-old twins Giulia and Camilla Venturini are all about minimalist yet bold art pieces.
Italy is experiencing a creative rebirth, with a new crop of creatives invigorating its design scene, putting valuable collaborations and the community at the fore.
Just like Cormio, Sunnei, and Jiwinaia, Medea has also been working on that essential craftsmanship with a contemporary approach. The brand's been one of the biggest names to enhance the Italian artisanal heritage since 2018, helping to build its future around consumption.
Named after Pier Paolo Pasolini’s 1969 film about the Greek mythological sorceress, Medea is the brainchild of artists & models. No doubt why figures such as Paloma Elsesser’s, Petra Collins, Dev Hynes, Beyoncé, and Gigi Hadid support the Milan-based label.
Crafted from matte calfskin leather in Verona, the essential bags come in a wide range of eye-candy colors and sizes, going from featuring enough space only for a new piece of jewelry to an oversized fit for a full-blown shopping spree.
The straightforward shape also creates a natural canvas for experimentation in leather.
The simplicity of its signature has served as a blank surface for art world provocateurs too, like photographer Nan Goldin and Judith Bernstein.
It comes as no surprise that a brand like this still runs and plays a major part in the creative scene of its home country to some of fashion’s most influential players.
As for what comes next: “We’re a strong accessories brand — you’re going to see sunglasses and shoes," says Medea.
Tap and stay in Italy a bit longer.
