US$ 1M for Kanye West's Nike Air Yeezy 1 prototype
A record like that could only belong to Kanye West. Before Yeezy became a phenomenon in the artist's partnership with Adidas, his first model for Nike came into the world in an unforgettable performance at the 2008 Grammy. That year, he won 4 awards and changed the world of sneakers forever.
The Nike Air Yeezy 1 prototype worn that night ended up in the hands of collector Ryan Chang and will be shown at auction house Sotheby's between April 16 and 21 at the Hong Kong Convention. The negotiation will be for private sale, both the final value and the buyer will only be revealed if it goes public.
Even before the auction starts, Air Yeezy is already considered the most valuable sneaker to ever appear on the market, with offers reaching US$1 million. This model created exclusively for Kanye in co-creation with Nike features soft black leather uppers with perforated detailing throughout the upper. The heel overlay is then branded with a tonal Swoosh.
Additionally, the design features the Yeezy forefoot strap and signature “Y” medallion lace locks in bright pink. Lastly, the sneaker comes in a custom lasered wooden box designed and etched by Yeezy 1's creator Mark Smith.
