The Nike Waffle Racing Flat, aka Moon Shoe, was designed by Nike co-founder and renowned Oregon University Track Coach Bill Bowerman for runners at the 1972 Olympic trials. Only 12 pairs of this design were created, with sole traction and leather suede structure.

5. US$409,000: Roger Bannister four-minute mile shoes

The shoes Bannister wore when he broke the four-minute mile were sold in 2015 for more than five times the expected amount. He clocked 3 minutes 59.4 seconds in the historic race in 1954 when he was a 25-year-old medical student. With leather structure, they were considered the lightest shoes of the time.
