The deep connection between Murakami & music.
The art of connecting music and words.
The legendary Japanese writer has always been deeply connected to music in every moment of his life, and we curated a playlist to show you, even better, for you to listen and feel the good taste of this great artist of our time.
Haruki Murakami needs no further introduction. Literary genius suits him, his bestselling books have been translated into more than 50 languages, and the author has influenced many others around the world. But today, we're here to talk about his passion for music.
We know the author has a collection of over 10,000 vinyl records, and it's easy to find Murakami calmly choosing an album to listen to in his extremely classy audio setup while sitting on a nice leather chair in his living room.
As early as 1979 in Hear The Wind Sing and 1982 in A Wild Sheep Chase or later in his career in Kafka on the Shore (2002), his works are often peppered with melodious descriptions of music; weaving an elegant arrangement that guides the reader throughdifferent genres like jazz, rock, country, and classical.
We believe it all started in his pre-author days, at the legendary Peter Cat Cafe: Café by day and jazz bar by night — a place Murakami created with his wife Yoko still in 1974. The writer started to draft what would be his first book there. Only in that place could he capture all his passions and give himself some peace of mind to write.
“Music is the inspiration for my work.”
Murakami’s clever connection with words and music continues until this day, and maybe, it can be said that music has shaped Murakami into the author he is today.
