Kubus Armchair by Josef Hoffmann

You've seen that South American designers like to play around with organic-driven shapes, but HOFFMANN had the goal of finding perfect math on this design.

The Kubus Armchair, created in 1910, represents strict geometric lines and a quadratic theme that kept consistent through the whole century. It was created with a soft foam cushion concealed in smooth & timeless leather — which you can find in 80 color options, no biggie.

Precise to the millimeter, Austrian architect Josef Hoffmann developed a rational form without curves and with meticulous attention to detail.

Kubus was not the only of Hoffmann's creations that caught the critics' attention. Throughout his career, he followed strict geometry in the search for simplicity, impacting even on his 1st major building, the Purkersdorf Sanatorium near Vienna.

“I admit everything practical and necessary, but I think we always have a duty to please. This joy is the main duty of our existence," said Hoffmann.

His contrast between tradition and modernity on iconic leather furniture is still relevant, being even a goal for many designers 'til this day. And we can also assume Kubus had something to do with the inspiration behind the Rubik's cube created in 1974 🧊.
