Igor Josifovic-Kemper interior decor tips.
Nothing compares to the energy of a new house, all the possibilities that can be created with 4 walls like blank canvases. But where to start?
Igor Josifovic-Kemper has been writing the Happy Interior decoration blog for a decade now, and since 2011, he has given tips for all types of readers. How to find the style of your first apartment, bring travel inspirations into your home, and still keep plants alive in an indoor garden.
Kemper shows us that we should definitely prioritize comfort and utility, but never dismiss the idea that our homes need to look like us. A very common mistake is choosing the first disposable furn you see on the internet because you're going to buy another one in the future. Spoiler: you won't change it later, and you'll only realize the problem when you notice that the cheap is actually expensive.
We're not talking about big investments, luckily extremely preserved leather sofas and armchairs are found in thrift stores, and they are capable of transforming your new place into a real new home.
Kemper himself moved apartments earlier this year and talked to us about how to find inspiration, leather goods, and most importantly, make your own home a welcoming place. Leave your shoes outside and scroll to read. πͺ΄
You just had a fresh start in decor. Did you reuse the furniture that you already had or did you buy something special for this new place?
Yes, I moved to Berlin in January. I took some of my furniture from my previous apartment in Munich, mainly loved vintage and one-of-a-kind pieces such as my Danish mid-century sideboard or my vintage Finn Juhl Diplomat chair. But I also bought new pieces for the Berlin apartment, as it is bigger and offers new options for decorating. A personal highlight is the vintage leather sofa by Brazilian designer Percival Lafer for the living room.
What was it like to put the tips and inspirations you share with your readers into practice? In interior decor, what can't be forgotten when we want to have that feeling of home?
It is an ongoing process and something that evolves over time. I try to share with my followers that every home is in flux, just as our lives are in flux too. The most important factor in interior decorating is to listen to your guts β trust your feelings and follow your instincts.
"At the end, the home should represent who we are and not reflect trends or replicate interior magazine stylings."
A real and cozy home should reflect the personality and character of its dweller.
A natural atmosphere seems to match your home from the plants to the furniture materials, like leather. What made you choose these pieces?
I am drawn to anything earthy and connected to nature. My love for plants is a given, so there are quite a few plants in my home and natural materials, and earthy colors are the best match in that case.
"I love to choose pieces that speak to all senses β for example, a piece of furniture should not only look good, it should also feel good to your touch."
I think this is incredibly important and brings a sense of coziness to any home.
