Asics "Monozukuri": An ode to Japanese craftsmanship

ASICS has kicked off 2021 with a variety of early sneaker unveilings, soon to be joined by the arrival of their latest "Monozukuri" Pack — a continuation of the label's collection celebrating the art of Japanese craftsmanship.

Where as the 2020 capsule only featured the GEL-Lyte III model, the new release highlights two sleek silhouettes: the ASICS GEL-Kayano 14 and GEL-Kayano Trainer 21 — both noticeable for their significant use of premium leather.

Using elite leather isn't groundbreaking for the brand — which joined the Leather Working Group (LWG) in 2018 to support the group's mission of promoting environmentally conscious manufacturing. Demonstrating their commitment to the initiative, ASICS expedited their goal of sourcing 80% of their leather from LWG medal-rated tanneries by 2020 — impressively reaching 88% before the end of 2018.

Constructed with a striking black leather build, the GEL-Kayano 14 is highlighted with contracting bright white accents that call attention to the exposed stitching details along with the laces, sock liners, and side logos. More juxtaposition between dark and light are seen through the creamy heel overlays surrounded by dark red accents, and a color-blocked sole unit alternating between light beige, GEL foam, and white treading.

The GEL-Kayano Trainer 21 sports a brighter build with the "birch" colored leather wrapping most of its base later and white details outlining the cage backdrop and heel panels, while subtle black finishes complete the liners. A tiny sliver of red detailing finishes the design along with black GEL pods and tan outsoles.

Expect the GEL-Kayano Trainer 21 to launch on February 11th via ASICS for $170 USD, wile the GEL-Kayano 14 follows on February 13th for $150 USD.
