A leather SHIRO KURAMATA chair is a whole design lesson.
Shiro Kuramata is a tru chair guru, mostly famous thanks to his “How High the Moon” chair, a hit from the 80s. He is also one of Japan's most important designers of the 20th century.
Mixing tropes of Western design with traditional Japanese aesthetics, materials were central to the work of Kuramata. His palette shows the various qualities that matter exhibits reflectivity, opacity, tactility. The form is presented just as a natural result of all that. 🥛🥢🛠
That said, we can understand why and how he became an expert on working with leather, and also on trying new paths as he did on the “Glass Chair”.
Thanks for the lessons, Kuramata. 🤞
