4 designs you need to know by David Ericsson

In March 2020, before the world went crazy, and we spent a lot — a lot — of time indoors, we went to David Ericsson’s home & studio in Stockholm to chat with him about his work, life, and creation process. David started his career with paintings and sculptures. While studying design, he also took a philosophy course, a characteristic very present in his works, as you can check here.

And following his own work philosophy, David creates thinking about caring. The relationship with the design is very personal, things need to have an identity to not be just a “thing”. That's why the material is so important, Ericsson uses leather because he values durability and knows the market's interest in sustainable furniture.

“How we produce things, how we take care of it when we are finished with it, how long it lasts, which people are using it, and how they are using it.”

These questions move his creations.

Verk

Inspired by the Shaker movement and traditional European ladder-back chairs, the Verk design is made exclusively of solid Swedish oak or birch, you can choose between the 3 seats: oak, smooth leather, and woven leather.

Pinzo

This is a chair with a strong personality, a stubborn little fellow in Ericsson's opinion. With a springy inclination, it offers an almost brutal simplicity of construction and leather covered seat.

Hedwig

This design is a homage to David's wife, Sara. As a child, she wanted to change her name to Hedwig, and now, she reads and drinks tea in this chair. Hedwig is made of solid beech with the seat and back covered in tanned leather, it is perfect for cozy moments.

Madonna

As the name says, this piece is an icon. Produced sustainably, this is a design with an almost human identity. The award-winning chair has the seat in wood covered with leather, and the leather back is attached with buttons, as if it were wrapped like a gift. Madonna has the perfect balance between aesthetics, function, and sustainability.

Ericsson told us that he wants to try different things that go from creating lamps to teaching design classes. He may not have the exact answer as to ‘what he is doing’, but as a philosopher, we know he will find it.
